motion capture research

in collaboration with

Matthijs Vuijk

In the realm of movement research, the artists express a keen interest in delving into their own explorations. With a history of recording numerous improvisations and performances, there is a curiosity to create an additional layer that mirrors the internal dynamics at play. The focus is on delving deeper into personal movement research, seeking a method to notate and encapsulate the ideas and emotions underlying each movement.

In the realm of technical research, the focus will be on utilizing a motion capture suit. Motion Capture, often abbreviated as mo-cap or mocap, is a sophisticated process involving the digital recording of human movement. Widely applied in diverse fields such as entertainment, sports, medical applications, ergonomics, and robotics, this technology holds significant relevance.

During the residency program, ICK Artist Space is a laboratory for innovation in dance art. It creates the opportunity to explore a new and urgent idea or to take previous research to the next level. The period ends with two public work-in-progress presentations, in which the makers open up their process and share the result with the public.

The maker receives artistic advice and guidance, but also support with production, publicity and promotion and technical facilities. ICK offers professional coaching and expertise in the development of the concept both before and during the work process. We offer studio space and 2 public presentations in Theaterstudio De Vlugt as part of a Double Bill. With these performances we want to facilitate meetings with other professionals, programmers and the public and enable dialogue in an informal, open way. The creator will have the opportunity to build a portfolio of the work with professional photography and video recording. The residency is concluded with a reflective evaluation, both oral and written.

DREEEAM

WAKEEE

OEROL FESTIVAL | OVER HET IJ FESTIVAL

CONCEPT by lucinda wessels

During the pandemic, Lucinda initiated an exploration of (lucid) dreams, a research endeavor she now continues within the confines of the Atelier. A theme that is sometimes literally and figuratively elusive. An exploration into a world where the boundary between dream and reality proves to be fluid.

A lucid dream is a state of being where the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming. You could describe it as if you thought you were watching a movie and suddenly realize you've been wearing a VR headset the whole time. Just as in a lucid dream, the dreamer can take control and interact with dream characters, the story, or the environment; the dreamer can also choose to be lucid by simply observing what is happening. Feel, see, and move in your own way, and bring your inner self out in SLEEEP DREEEAM WAKEEE.

Lucinda Wessels is a multidisciplinary artist. She is creative with movement, image, and music. She loves conceptual thinking and is distinctive in form. During the pandemic, she created an interactive online performance with green screens, video images, and visual effects. In collaboration with Nineties Productions and Hows of Norms, she presented 'The Lucid Express.' A digital journey that takes you through a 'train of thought' moving from chaos to stillness. The theme is based on introspection, meaning, and dreams. Hows of Norms created a short film with the same theme, programmed in the NEW DUTCH category of CINEDANS FEST 21.

Waking up in a dream is like being offered a new perspective.

One in which you may move, decide, observe, and reflect.

CONCEPT by EVELIEN JANSEN

4 days, 4 nights

Inspired by her Vision Quest Evelien Jansen directed and performed

a concept video in collaboration with CJ P. Roxas

In 2021 Evelien embarked on her Vision Quest.

For four days and four nights, she immersed herself in the solitude of nature, engaging in prayer, fasting, and expressions of gratitude, following an ancient Native American tradition. Armed only with a sleeping bag, Evelien experienced profound vulnerability, emotional depth, and solitude, yet paradoxically felt an immense sense of power, connection, and pride. During this transformative journey, she sang, danced, and celebrated life, forging a deep connection with the elemental forces of nature. The insights gained during this adventure continue to resonate within her, shaping a lasting impact on Evelien's perspective and understanding of life.

Lucinda and Evelien made an exclusive subtract from a residency they’ve been working on. Both of them are individually at a high level in moving but also making. Well experienced and they can create at a fast pace. They heard about Tiny Theatre and went straight into the lab to adapt it into the space. It takes two experts to put on a performance like this. Also premiering for the first time ‘Suits In Space’ by Hows of Norms.

NOHA SARÉ - L O S T

Director (& concept) - Izak Berman

Movement direction & casting - Lucinda Wessels

Dance Artists: Beau Andreas, Debbie Ruijter (lap scene), Diede Vermeesh (lap scene), Isabel Boenders, Lotte Leppers, Megan Simons, Melisa Diktas (braid duet), Sandra Hilaerts (braid duet).

An evocative alt-pop tune that embraces vulnerability and smoulders with assertiveness, Amsterdam-based songwriter Noha Saré has shared her latest single ‘Lost’. Taken from her upcoming EP which is set for release later this year, the track fuses elements of R&B and electro-pop alongside Noha’s soulful vocals to reflect the way in which our moods shift when we’re contemplating our future.

“Everybody has their own demons and it’s okay to talk about it,” Noha explains. “Almost everyone has struggled with not knowing who they are, what they really want in life or where they’re headed. I got better in finding peace with who I am, including all the ups and downs, by accepting that it is okay to be scared and insecure and it’s okay to not know where you’re heading”. Through her atmospheric beats and smooth vocals, Noha makes a musical truce with her inner turmoil and leans into the unknown with impressive flair.

‘Lost’ is also accompanied by a striking set of visuals, directed by Noha’s best friend and visual artist Izak Berman. “My internal fight is embodied by 8 female performers,” she explains. “Two of them engage in a game of attraction and repulsion. The video shows an enchanting oscillation between pleasure and pain, past and future, hope and disbelief. Within a surreal composition, which seems to be somewhere between a dream and reality, showing the obscure side of my world.”

“creative processes involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem, self -awareness and achieve insight.”

LUCINDA is co-founder of 𝐇𝐎𝐖𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐒 and has gained professional experience as a dance artist, choreographer and DJ. Like most artists, she is a free spirit. So quickly distracted, but above all creative, intuitive and investigative.

From an early age she has been inspired by the creativity within Hiphop dance and culture and has also learned a lot from academic styles. Over the years, Lucinda has continued to search for her own form of movement and prefers to dance from her own story / feeling with movement concepts, instead of with a defined style as the foundation.

As a teacher Lucinda also strongly believes in the authentic power and choices of the dancer and therefore gives improvisation techniques at dance academies in addition to choreography. Lucinda is a performing artist and movement director at Hows of Norms."

RESIDENTIE @ DOX

ART expo

MUSE

On December 15, new creators from DOX, Lucinda Wessels & CJ Perez, presented their project 'Meet us see everything,' also known as MUSE.

DOX, the prominent Utrecht urban dance company, comprises independent and versatile artists dedicated to passing on their knowledge to a new generation.

MUSE, a conceptual evening conceived by the creators, aimed to provide a platform for showcasing artists. In this instance, Lucinda & CJ introduced visitors to the co-creations they had crafted themselves.

Drawing inspiration from music, dance, theater, art, and museums, the event offered an immersive experience where viewers encountered a myriad of visual stimuli. Content-wise, various alter egos took the forefront, each capable of conveying different emotions. The creators envisioned their work prompting questions from the visitors and inducing a 'muse-like' state.

The showcased work was crafted through improvisation, utilized within this residency to observe and unravel a story. The dream world presented by Lucinda and CJ was characterized by surreal influences, punctuated with cinematic images and live performances. Rooted in their life questions, these two creators embraced layers and boldness, inviting viewers to momentarily wander into their MUSE.
